Chapter Eighteen

Nimue

Nimue remained glamoured as an old woman to rest and recuperate. She barely had the energy to leave the room she was given, so she stayed there, sitting by the window to feel the air on her face. The monk that had woken her brought her more food and tried to ask her questions, but she refused to answer. She didn’t feel like making up some story. They wouldn’t be alive for long anyway.

These Christian abbeys were spreading lies and convincing humans to harm, capture, and even kill the fae, and Glastonbury was the worst of them all. The Tor had once been a sacred place where the two worlds merged‌. It had vibrated with magic, but the Christian zealots had ripped through and massacred the priestesses. She could still feel the raw power the Tor held. It aided in her healing. Her magic would be more powerful here. But she would have to wait to retrieve the item they had hidden away until she was fully recovered. Then she would turn the abbey to ash.

As she figured, she was fully rested and recovered by nightfall. Nimue waited until the monks were all fast asleep before she removed the glamour from herself, the magic sliding from her body as though she had emerged from water, and snuck out of her room. She kept to the shadows in the corridors, hands on the stone, feeling for signs of energy and vibrations. It was here somewhere, and with how important it was to the Christians, she was surprised there weren’t armed guards around. The stories said that Sir Galahad, the knight who found the Grail, had taken it with him in death, but she knew it was brought here by Sir Percival after Galahad’s death many years ago. She had watched him do it. She’d been with the other priestesses of Avalon that had escorted Percival, his sister, and another knight back to Briton after they lost Galahad on their quest. Nimue paused in the dark corridor, shaking the thoughts from her head. That life was in the past, so much so that it barely felt as if it had been her own once.

The swish of fabric and footsteps echoed down the hall, and she pressed herself into the wall, closing her eyes and asking the shadows to hide her. They blanketed her with their warmth, and she held still. The monk that had cared for her hurried down the hall, his dressing robe billowing out behind him as he cradled a bowl in his hands. She waited until his footsteps faded and thanked the shadows.

Nimue continued on her way down the halls, and her heart skipped a beat when she came upon a door. The familiar hum and scent of apples filled the air. She would recognize her sister’s magic anywhere. The door was locked, but she pressed a finger to the lock and it clicked open. She pushed on the door and slipped inside, careful not to make any noise.
